The clinical use of oral appliances (OA) is a reliable treatment option that orthodontists can adopt in the management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Scientific evidence of the past 30 years support the use of OA as a safe alternative with good cost/benefit. These devices fall into two main types: mandibular repositioning appliances and tongue retainers. The choice of the best OA modality is crucial for a successful treatment. The purpose of this article is to describe the most commonly used OA arrangements, their mechanisms of action and indication criteria for each one.
