Repeatability and reproducibility of angular and linear measurements obtained from Cone-Beam Computed Tomography scans

Introduction / The aim of this study was to investigate the repeatability and reproducibility of angular and linear measurements obtained from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. / Methods / Ten patients (5 females and 5 males; with age ranging from 21 to 36 years) were retrospectively selected from CBCT data sets available in a center for dental diagnosis and planning services (Compass3D, Belo Horizonte/MG, Brazil). CBCT examination was performed with i-CAT scanner (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA, USA). The DICOM files were imported into SimPlant Ortho Pro 2.0 software (Materialise Dental, Leuven, Belgium), in which landmarks were located using multiplanar reconstruction, and measurements were made. A total of 53 linear and 21 angular measurements were obtained by five experienced observers, and repeated after a two-week interval. The values were stored in a database and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated. / Results / The ICC for linear measurements rated > 0.90 in 67.9% and 62.3%, and ≤ 0.45 in 0% and 0% of intraobserver and interobserver assessments, respectively. The ICC for angular measurements rated > 0.90 in 57.1% and 52.4%, and ≤ 0.45 in 0% and 9.5% of intraobserver and interobserver assessments, respectively. / Conclusions / The repeatability and reproducibility of angular and linear measurements obtained from cone-beam computed tomography scans were found to be acceptable in this study, ensuring the reliability of the method.
