The decision between extractions or expansion is a hard task during orthodontic treatment. Recently, self- ligating brackets have reintroduced this controversy. The objective of this study was to analyze the evidence available in the current scientiic literature on this subject, trying to identify criteria to substantiate orthodontists in their decision. After an extensive literature review and analysis of clinical cases, it was concluded that both treatment options are effective when properly indicated. The pattern of expansion produced by self-ligating brackets seems to be similar to that of conventional brackets. Brackets should be chosen in accordance with the treatment objectives set for each case.
